  3. What to actually do about it: Use skin devices within 5-15cm of your face and recovery devices within 5-10cm of the target muscle — and unlike ice baths, red light won't slow your gains.

Think of light intensity like a garden hose nozzle from across a room. At two feet the jet reaches you with force. At twelve feet the same nozzle disperses into a mist — same water, a fraction of the impact. Red light follows the same physics: clinical researchers press devices against skin at 20-200 mW/cm². Consumer marketing shows people standing across the room at 3-10 mW/cm². The science is identical. The delivery is not.

  • Apply post-exercise, not during
  • Standing panels at arm's length: expect minimal deep-tissue effect

Universal Rules

Do not exceed 30 J/cm² for facial applications — biphasic overdose risk means more is NOT better. Blue + red combination devices outperform red-only for acne. PBM does not blunt training adaptation — unlike ice baths, you don't have to choose.

What would downgrade this: a replication failure from an independent lab using identical device specs and the same 660nm wavelength, or evidence that the blinding was compromised by perceptible warmth differences.

What would change my mind — Consumer panel efficacy

An RCT using an FDA-cleared consumer standing panel at exactly 18 inches, measuring intramuscular CK clearance and isometric peak torque over 96 hours post-eccentric exercise against a verified sham panel — with internal dosimetry chips confirming delivered irradiance. If consumer panels match clinical outcomes at real-world distances, conviction upgrades to HIGH. If not, consumer verdict downgrades to confirmed LOW.
